Pet insurance does not cover pre-existing conditions, routine wellness visits on standard plans, elective procedures, breeding costs, or experimental treatments. Knowing the exclusions before you buy is just as important as knowing what is covered.
Pre-Existing Conditions
The biggest exclusion by far. Any illness, injury, or symptom noted in your pet's records before your policy's effective date is excluded. Incurable conditions are excluded permanently. Curable conditions may be covered again after a 12-month symptom-free period at some providers.
Routine and Preventive Care
Standard accident and illness plans do not cover: annual wellness exams, vaccinations, flea and tick prevention, routine dental cleanings, spaying and neutering, nail trims, grooming, or microchipping. These require a wellness add-on on comprehensive plans only.
Elective and Cosmetic Procedures
- Ear cropping and tail docking
- Cosmetic dentistry and weight loss programs
- Breeding, whelping, and pregnancy costs
- Dewclaw removal for non-medical reasons
Behavioral Issues
Most plans do not cover behavioral training or separation anxiety treatment unless it results from a diagnosed medical condition. Some newer plans are adding behavioral coverage as an optional add-on.
Experimental Treatments
Treatments not yet widely accepted by veterinary medicine are generally excluded. This varies by provider — some cover alternative therapies like acupuncture and hydrotherapy as add-ons.
The bottom line: Standard pet insurance covers unexpected medical events. Everything routine, elective, or predictable is your responsibility. Wellness add-ons bridge that gap for owners who want more complete coverage.
